Have you ever put a can of soda in the freezer to chill but forgot it was in the freezer, only to discover the soda exploded in the freezer? When water freezes, it expands. If it expands enough, pipes will burst. We have been hearing so many complaints about pipes bursting this winter and wanted to provide you with some tips to prevent your pipes from bursting.
1. Let your faucets drip – allowing the faucet to drip keeps pressure from building up in the pipes.
2. Use heating tape – for pipes that are easily accessible, you can wrap electrical heating tape around the pipes. There are different types of heating tape and you find this at your local hardware store: Lowes, Home Depot or Ace Hardware.
3. Add additional insulation around pipes in the crawl space, attic, and basement.
4. Keep your the cabinet doors (kitchen, bathroom) open so that heat from the rest of the house will keep the pipes warm,
