Winter is Coming

Fall is here but winter is coming!  Every year we hear about homeowners forgetting to disconnect their water hose from the outside spigot before the temperature drops below freezing.  This can be a costly mistake!

When using the water hose and turning the spigot off, there is still water in the hose, in addition to water in the line going to the spigot.  When the temperature drops below freezing, the water in the hose and spigot turns to ice.   Ice expands and creates a crack in the copper pipe of the spigot.  The crack won’t be noticed until the spigot is turned on and water proceeds to where the crack is (inside the home), pouring water into the house.  This is not covered under your home warranty.  Winter is coming, so please don’t forget to disconnect your hose prior to temperatures dropping.
